Urban Kīpuka: Native Plant and Agroforestry Gardens

Promoting biodiversity islands (kīpuka) to restore connectivity from mauka to makai in urban (human inhabited) areas. Our Go Native Project promotes native Hawaiian and canoe plant gardens, while our Trees for People Project promotes backyard syntropic agroforestry systems (that may include some native plants). Goals are to increase food security and food sovereignty, tree canopy, permeable surface area to capture stormwater runoff, etc. An important part of our work is to inspire and empower people in the community to take personal and collective action, often literally in their own backyard.
