TRI Hui Koa native forest reforestation information
TRI Hui Koa & Native Forest Reforestation
Healthy forests are the foundation of Hawaiʻi’s environmental, cultural, and economic well-being. The Reforestation Investment (TRI) Hui koa forest restoration projects target scalable establishment and restoration of koa forests by a variety of landowner types - from large to smaller scale, private to public, and across Hawai‘i’s landscapes and communities. Over 5,000 acres of demonstration “at-scale” projects across O’ahu, Maui, and Hawai’i Island that support native forest management via forestry, conservation, and ecosystem service markets (i.e., existing voluntary carbon markets). The identified projects are early adopter pilot projects that are “shovel-ready” and are located on transitional agricultural lands (formerly koa forests) and degraded native forests that have significant potential for greenhouse gas mitigation via enhanced carbon sequestration along with benefits of expanding native forest habitat, improving watershed health, mitigating wildfire threats, and restoring cultural resources to landscapes.
