Supporting ʻŌiwi Agroforestry

We will support and expand equitable ʻŌiwi agroforestry by facilitating knowledge exchanges and collective reforestation among a network of mahiʻai from ‘Ōiwi-led organizations. Diverse agroforestry systems were widespread in Hawaiʻi prior to European contact. Today, these organizations reconnect people to ʻāina by transforming urban and unused agricultural lands to agroforestry with benefits for biodiversity, food sovereignty, fire risk mitigation, community well-being, and climate change. Our project responds to a stated need for opportunities to gather to exchange knowledge, resources, and lessons learned to reclaim Indigenous knowledge and practices and overcome legacies of injustice.
