Statewide flood susceptibility maps for Hawaiʻi 2050–2100

Impacts of Climate and Land-Cover Change on Flooding in Hawaiʻi: Developing Web-Based Statewide Flood Susceptibility Maps for 2050, 2080, and 2100

Development of web-based statewide flood susceptibility maps for Hawaiʻi for 2050, 2080, and 2100, accounting for projected climate and land-cover changes. Federal and state agencies, as well as local communities, rely heavily on Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) flood hazard maps to identify areas at risk of flooding; however, these maps have significant spatial gaps and are often based on outdated data and methodologies, limiting Hawaiʻi's ability to effectively prepare for and mitigate flood risks. A statewide flood susceptibility map for Hawaiʻi representing 2025 conditions is currently being developed by the Principal Investigator (PI) through a federal grant. The future maps are intended to help federal, state, and local agencies identify high-priority areas for flood risk communication and disaster risk reduction, provide a scientific basis for allocating limited resources, and support land-use and development planning by identifying areas where future development may face elevated flood risks. The post describes the project's rationale and expected benefits but makes no specific request of the product.
