Statewide disaster-resilient infrastructure investment for Hawai‘i food hubs

Investing in Food Hubs That Hold: Building Hawai‘i’s Food System Resilience Before the Next Disaster

Fund site-specific disaster-resilience improvements across the Hawai‘i Food Hub Hui's 14 member food hubs statewide, including solar power and battery storage, backup generators, refrigeration and cold storage, water systems, communications equipment, flood protection, and other critical infrastructure needed to keep hubs operating when hurricanes, floods, wildfires, or prolonged utility outages disrupt conventional systems. The network of 14 food hubs serves communities across the Hawaiian Islands. The goal is a decentralized, interconnected food distribution system that keeps locally produced food moving before, during, and after emergencies, protects perishable inventory, supports farmers who depend on reliable markets, and serves as a distribution partner for community resilience hubs and emergency response organizations — reducing dependence on imported food, emergency shipments from outside Hawai‘i, and fossil fuels, with investments tailored to each hub's vulnerabilities and an emphasis on renewable energy, climate adaptation, and long-term sustainability.
