Shared cold storage network to cut Hawai‘i farm food loss

Develop a climate-resilient agricultural distribution network for Hawai‘i's small farmers, leveraging existing facilities, because small farmers lack affordable cold storage, aggregation, and distribution infrastructure, resulting in food loss and limited market access. The initiative is titled "Hawai‘i Small Farmer Food Loss Prevention and Climate-Resilient Distribution". Funding would support energy-efficient refrigeration, backup power, shared post-harvest equipment, coordinated farm pickups, and emergency food storage and distribution capabilities.

Expected Outcomes: Reduced post-harvest food loss, improved distribution efficiency, increased small-farmer participation, and stronger agricultural disaster resilience.
