Reef modules for flexible infrastructure
By replacing traditional armoring with ecological coastal design, Hawaiʻi can combat coastal erosion and safeguard its communities while regenerating the reefs that naturally protect them. We have integrated scientifically designed coral-growth surfaces into tetrapods, revetments, and breakwaters. These engineered textures mimic natural settlement habitats, attracting coral larvae and supporting early reef growth. Deployed at sites statewide, they would provide durable shoreline protection while rebuilding reef structure and biodiversity. This initiative leverages Hawaiʻi’s marine research (UH, ARL), restoration leadership (DAR), community stewardship, and local blue-economy innovators (Makai Ocean Engineering, UH start-up Reefmasons). It supports climate resilience, workforce development, and federal natural-infrastructure efforts (e.g., DARPA Reefense). We seek legislative partnership for a multi-island strategy to support engineering, permitting, deployment and monitoring.
