Purpose-built food storage and distribution facility in Līhuʻe
Strengthen Kauaʻi's Food Security Infrastructure & Emergency Preparedness
Strengthen Kauaʻi's food security and disaster preparedness by increasing the amount of food that can be stored on island and ensuring it can be distributed when power, transportation and supply chains are disrupted. Hurricane Lowell demonstrated how quickly food access can be affected when widespread power outages close stores and gas stations, the port is disrupted and refrigerated and frozen foods are lost. A new purpose-built facility in Līhuʻe would increase on-island food storage capacity from approximately 250,000 pounds to as much as 1.5 million pounds, with expanded dry, refrigerated and frozen storage, backup power and improved infrastructure for receiving and distributing food throughout Kauaʻi and Niʻihau. The facility would also expand year-round capacity for food rescue, local food procurement and distribution of locally grown and nutritious foods through Hawai'i Foodbank Kaua'i and its community partners.
