Pono Landscape Endorsement Program for Maui County

Invasive pests such as coconut rhinoceros beetle, coqui frogs, and little fire ants threaten Maui’s landscapes and the visitor experience that defines Hawaiʻi. The Pono Landscape Endorsement Program would train and certify landscape professionals, nurseries, and resorts in best practices for pest prevention, sourcing, and inspection. Modeled after successful Plant Pono programs on Hawaiʻi Island and Kauaʻi, the initiative would provide education, certification, and public recognition to promote responsible industry standards. Funding would support staff to develop curriculum, conduct trainings, and engage businesses, with a goal of certifying at least half of Maui’s resorts and nurseries within two years.
