Pilina Manu native bird habitat monitoring program

The Pilina Manu Monitoring Initiative integrates technology and field expertise to monitor native Hawaiian bird habitats across space and time. A bioacoustics sensor is placed at each site to record birds, crickets, and frogs. A canopy camera monitors the phenology changes of the dominant tree species in the area. An understory camera is set to monitor ungulates and other non-native predators. A third camera monitors small mammal densities around the sensor site. Additionally, Drone imagery is taken bi-annually to monitor shifts in the upper canopy structure. This data will be coupled with field observations to help guide management at the preserves.
