Pili Nā Moku: Resilience Through ʻĀina Stewardship

Pili Nā Moku (pilinamoku.org) is dedicated to the goal of building a resilient future for the Hawaiian Islands. Pili Nā Moku seeks to reinvigorate the moku system by investing in large-scale ʻāina restoration efforts and governance practices that balance place-based stewardship with centralized decision-making. Project activities are centered in five moku or hui moku in 1) West Kauaʻi; 2) Waiʻanae, Oʻahu; 3) Molokaʻi 4) Central Maui; and 5) Kohala, Hawaiʻi. These moku were chosen because of their high potential to promote Native Hawaiian stewardship and cultural practices in areas that have lacked historic climate adaptation investments. Project activities are led by a dozen collaborators spanning government agencies, academia, non-profits, and collectives of Indigenous and local stewards. This implementation-focused project is primed for additional funding to expand community-based ʻāina restoration and knowledge-sharing efforts.
