More Tree Canopy, Less Heat – Healthier Places

Rising heat threatens health, safety, and Hawaiʻi’s livability. Shade trees are one of the few natural, proven ways to cool our communities while improving quality of life, supporting local businesses, and enhancing Hawaiʻi’s sustainable image. We propose allocating $500,000 in Green Fee funds (with a 50% match) for planting the right trees in the right places with the right long-term care. This $750,000 investment will strengthen climate resilience, protect natural resources, and enhance visitors/residents enjoyment and health. Trees for Honolulu’s Future will coordinate project selection, community engagement, and performance tracking, reserving at least 25% of funds for commercial and visitor areas where canopy matters most.
