Modeling Climate Hazards for a Resilient Hawaiʻi

The University of Hawaiʻi Coastal Research Collaborative (CRC) seeks $2 million in Green Fee funding to advance modeling of sea level rise flooding, heat, drought, coastal erosion, drainage failure, and pluvial flooding. This initiative is both an environmental and economic investment, designed to improve statewide understanding of hazard extent, frequency, and cascading impacts. The project will support 15 highly skilled climate modelers at SOEST whose expertise is critical for producing cutting-edge simulations of Hawaiʻi’s future climate. Retaining this talent is essential to ensure that the state remains prepared to assess risk, guide infrastructure planning, and build resilient, thriving communities across the islands through science-driven adaptation and sustainable development.
