Marine Debris Rapid Response
Pacific Whale Foundation’s Marine Debris Rapid Response program addresses urgent threats to Maui’s nearshore and coastal ecosystems by swiftly removing large-scale marine debris, particularly derelict fishing gear and nets, from the environment. As the designated marine debris response organization for Maui under contract with Hawaiʻi’s Division of Aquatic Resources, Pacific Whale Foundation mobilizes trained staff and dedicated volunteers to assess, document, and remove hazardous debris that endangers marine life such as sea turtles, whales, and Hawaiian monk seals. This year-round effort mitigates bycatch risk, reduces plastic pollution, and protects critical coral reef habitats. The program complements long-term marine debris monitoring while providing direct, immediate intervention in response to community and agency reports of high-risk debris.
