Koheo Wetland - Helping Keiki and Manu Thrive
Koheo is a 10-acre coastal salt marsh on the South Shore of Molokaʻi and is home to the Kio‘ea (the Official Bird of Kaunakakai), and the Endangered aeʻo (Hawaiian Stilt) which numbers just 1,500 individuals in the world. It is a vital link in a chain of connected wetland locations along the coast. Koheo is in an easily accessible residential location, so it is utilized extensively by teachers to extend classroom curriculum to the outdoor environment; it is also a draw to visiting and resident bird watchers. The Moloka‘i Land Trust (MLT) is seeking to protect the site by upgrading and repairing existing fencing, removing invasive species, supporting the regeneration of culturally important Hawaiian plants such as makaloa, adding informational signage and creating a hale/bird watching hide for educational use; MLT will also carry out related outreach activities with the local community.
