Kauaʻi Ocean Plastic Upcycling

The Kauaʻi Ocean Plastic Upcycling Program, led by Hoʻomalu Ke Kai in partnership with the County of Kauaʻi, transforms marine debris and single-use plastics into durable public infrastructure such as benches, picnic tables, and self-service beach cleanup stations. Operating from a community facility in Kaumakani using Precious Plastic machinery, the project diverts ocean- and landfill-bound plastics into long-lasting products that enhance parks and public spaces. Responding to requests from DLNR for upcycled furnishings at coastal sites, it builds circular economy solutions that benefit both residents and visitors. With appropriate funding, the program will train and hire local residents to process community plastics, expand processing capacity, and engage more people in reducing plastic waste island-wide.
