Indigenous Climate Infrastructure - Waipiʻo

The project addresses critical flood risk and water security in Waipiʻo Valley by reconstructing ancestral ‘auwai (irrigation canals), rebuilding degraded lo‘i kalo (taro terraces), stabilizing erosion-prone slopes with native plantings, and outplanting indigenous species to restore watershed health. The project builds climate-ready infrastructure—including a traditional learning hale, reinforced trails, and footbridges—enabling safe year-round access for Native Hawaiian producers while installing hydrological monitoring systems to track water flow, soil conditions, and vegetation health for adaptive management.
