Honoring Tradition Thru Innovation, Mantokuji Bay

  1. Provide resilience to the coastal ecosystem at Mantokuji Bay; 2. Restore the natural coastal features to mitigate the effects of SLR and erosion; 3. Reduce the risk of public safety hazards, by safeguarding existing infrastructure. The area includes the 1-mile long coastline of Mantokuji Bay, Maui, adjacent to Pā’ia, including Mantokuji Mission, a temple listed on the Hawai‘i Register of Historic Places, a cemetery, and homes. Since the 1930s the beach sand was mined by Maui County for use in public infrastructure projects. The Project: 1. Analysis of shoreline conditions, wave patterns, sediment dynamics, existing dunes and headlands and vegetation to determine the most suitable restoration measures; 2. Select the most suitable options based on their feasibility, effectiveness, cost, environmental impacts; 3. Improve resilience from storms, floods, SLR, and erosion; 4. Conduct community engagement; 5. Identify potential sources of offshore sand; 6. Permits and approvals.
