Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative: Restoring the Forests of Our Past, Growing a Legacy for Future Generations
The Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative, a Hawaiʻi-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, proposes to expand the restoration and long-term protection of Hawaiʻi's native forests on Hawaiʻi Island and Oʻahu. Having already planted over 600,000 native Hawaiian trees, HLRI is working toward its mission of planting 1.3 million endemic Hawaiian trees—one for every man, woman, and child in Hawaiʻi when this vision began.
This project will restore degraded landscapes, expand native tree planting, manage invasive species, and provide the ongoing care necessary for these forests to thrive. These efforts will restore critical habitat for Hawaiʻi's rare and endangered species, strengthen watersheds, sequester carbon, and preserve our islands' irreplaceable natural heritage.
We may not live to see every tree reach the sky, but our keiki and generations to come will stand beneath the forests we chose to bring back.
