Hawaiʻi Monitoring and Reporting Collaborative

The Hawai‘i Monitoring and Reporting Collaborative (HIMARC) provides scientific support for marine resource management in Hawai‘i by collaboratively bridging the gap between data collection and decision making. HIMARC includes collaborations among state, federal, non-profit, and university researchers across 14 organizations. We combine data from underwater surveys of fishes, coral, and limu alongside statewide assessments of drivers of nearshore condition (e.g., waves, pollution, fishing). With these rich sources, HIMARC createʻs analyses and outputs that are centered around understanding and informing improved resilience of Hawaiʻi’s reefs and improving overall capacity to monitor and respond to changes in nearshore environments. The combined datasets are applied to a variety of management questions using a co-production model with government and community organizations.
