Hawaiʻi Emergency Reef Restoration (HERR) Network

The HERR Network brings together state, academic, non-profit, and community organizations to address the high level of coral damage that occurs routinely across the state. Through the HERR Network, coral restoration practitioners, government agencies, community groups and researchers are building the capacity to respond to coral damage within the counties of Kaua‘i, Maui, O‘ahu and Hawai‘i. The Network supports stewardship, readiness, and rapid response to reattach corals to support reef integrity and health. Coral reefs are an important cultural and natural resource, providing valuable benefits like fisheries, flood protection, and endangered species habitat. However, stronger weather events caused by climate change are causing increased physical reef damage, knocking more corals loose onto the sea floor. If reattached within 45 days through rapid repairs, these corals can survive at high rates and continue to provide benefits to the people, plants, and animals that rely on them.
