Protecting Honokanaʻia Base Camp: Fire Breaks and Barriers
Install gravel breaks and fire barriers around the Honokanaʻia base camp to protect staff housing, infrastructure, and nearby restoration sites from wildfire. The 2020 fire on Kahoʻolawe showed how quickly fire can threaten years of restoration work, and infastructure on the island. Defensible space around camp is a practical, low-maintenance step that protects the team and the restoration reserve has worked to establish. Funding would cover gravel, equipment, transport, and labor.
