Critical water source repair at Kahikinui
Kahikinui has an abundance of dry, flammable vegetation that frequently ignite, creating wildfires that threaten community, cultural, and ecological resources. Critical water resources were once established and require repair for fire suppression. Two reservoirs previously serving the region for grazing, restoration and fire suppression are no longer functional and require basic maintenance and upgrading of liner material to become functional. Due to its remote location and unpaved roads, fire response by ground crews is impractical, and water drops by helicopter are crucial when fighting fire. If these water sources were functional, fire response would be more efficient. This project will clear vegetation from the reservoirs and re-line them, providing the community with additional water sources for fire suppression as well as agricultural and reforestation efforts.
