Collaborative Hulēʻia watershed restoration initiative
Mālama Hulēʻia proposes a collaborative, watershed-wide approach to identifying and advancing restoration opportunities in the Hulēʻia watershed on Kauaʻi that improve wetland function, hydrological connectivity, and long-term coastal resilience. Invasive vegetation and changes to natural water movement have affected the ability of these ecosystems to function as they once did. Building on more than a decade of restoration experience at Alakoko loko iʻa, the initiative would bring together landowners, conservation organizations, government agencies, and community members to develop a shared vision and coordinated strategy. Through collaborative planning, ecological assessment, and community engagement, the project would help identify priorities and guide future investments in nature-based solutions. A healthier Hulēʻia watershed can strengthen natural flood protection, support native ecosystems and fisheries, preserve Hawaiian cultural landscapes, and contribute to the long-term resilience of Kauaʻi's communities and coastal economy.
