Aquaculture to enhance Hawaii recreational fisheries
Aquaculture as a Tool to Enhance Recreational Fisheries in Hawaii
Explore applying aquaculture technologies and methodologies developed by Hawaii researchers, including Oceanic Institute of Hawaiʻi Pacific University, to support the production, rearing, and responsible enhancement of marine fish populations important to recreational fishers in Hawaiʻi. The approach would integrate advances in marine finfish aquaculture, hatchery production, larval rearing, nutrition, and fish health management to help supplement natural recruitment, improve fishing opportunities, and reduce pressure on wild fish stocks. Particular emphasis on identifying suitable native and locally important recreational species, developing responsible stock enhancement strategies, and evaluating the ecological and socioeconomic benefits of aquaculture-supported fisheries, through collaboration among aquaculture researchers, fisheries managers, recreational fishing communities, and local stakeholders, contributing to sustainable recreational fishing, marine resource stewardship, and Hawaiʻi's blue economy.
