A network of self-sustaining coral nurseries

Hawaiʻi’s coral reefs are under threat from warming seas, storms, and pollution, leaving coastlines more vulnerable to erosion. To restore reef resilience, we propose establishing a statewide network of 50 self-sustaining coral nurseries built from scientifically designed growth structures optimized to attract coral larvae and speed reef recovery. Deployed as interconnected mats, these nurseries will stabilize damaged reef areas, reduce erosion, and create strong foundations for new coral growth. Supporting young corals is the fastest and most effective way to rebuild reef populations. Each nursery will become a living hub of biodiversity, seeding nearby reefs with corals, fish, and urchins. This project builds on reef restoration led by the University of Hawaiʻi, the Division of Aquatic Resources, and community partners statewide and will grow reefs that protect Hawaiʻi’s coasts and its future.
